Why 20 white skulls do not give 20 Graveyard quality
A corpse has potential. A grave has actual decoration quality.
The scoring rule is:
Grave score = min(gravestone + fence − red skulls, white skulls)
If a body has 21 white skulls and no red skulls, but its gravestone and fence total 14, the grave contributes 14.
Nothing disappeared. The excess white skulls simply cannot be expressed by the available decorations.
This matters for optimization: you do not need to turn every corpse into a mathematically extreme specimen just to maximize the graveyard.
First decide: burial or zombie
The two goals pull in opposite directions.
For graves:
white skulls cap the score;
red skulls penalize decoration quality.
For zombies:
red skulls determine the number of possible talent upgrades;
extra white skulls do not have the same effect on worker progression.
Do not prepare a zombie candidate exactly as if it were a future grave. Removing red pocket items can reduce its eventual talent potential.
For the worker system, see How Zombies Work.
The cheapest early corpse improvement
For first-tier corpses, pockets do most of the work:
- 1
Place the body on an Autopsy Table.
- 2
Search its pockets. Pickpocketing has no Anatomy requirement and cannot create a
Surgeon’s Error.
- 3
- 4
Leave
Flesh, which contributes one white skull.
- 5
Only then decide whether surgery is necessary.
Do not remove a
Heart or Skull simply because the option is visible when you are short of Anatomy Mastery. A botched operation can permanently ruin the slot.
Why higher-tier bodies can be harder
Story progression brings corpses from higher tiers. They generally have more white skulls, but also more red skulls inside organs, not merely in the pockets.
That means simple pocket extraction stops being a complete fix. You may need embalming, organ replacement or carefully selected donor organs.
Before investing resources, compare your corpse's white count with the best decorations you actually have. Once you can reach 14 with zero red penalty, more white skulls do not improve that grave's final score.
What is Organ Improver?
An Organ Improver is an alchemy product combined with an organ at the
Formulation Bench.
A successful fixed recipe upgrades an organ of any starting quality to a specific three-star version, with a predetermined red/white-skull distribution.
Unlock
Alchemy, Advanced, then
Practical Potions. Current data lists 100 green and 100 blue tech points for Practical Potions.
The Formulation Bench then gains recipes covering six organ types with two variants each: one for grave-oriented white skulls and one for zombie-oriented red skulls.
How to make the white Organ Improver
The
white improver is a two-ingredient alchemy mix.
Target formula:
4 green runes
A verified simple combination is:
Flour + Flour
→ Organ Improver (white skull)
Study the ingredients first and make sure the Laboratory can access them. Then bring the resulting improver and the chosen organ to the
Formulation Bench.
How to make the red Organ Improver
The
red version is designed for high-talent zombies.
Target formula:
4 red + 1 green rune
A combination listed in current extracted game data (not independently play-tested by us):
Stone + Copper Nugget
→ Organ Improver (red skull)
This is how you intentionally create an organ with strong red-skull capacity rather than hoping for the right random body.
What values do upgraded organs have?
Current game data shows the
white improver creating these values:
All six white-improved organs therefore total 3 red and 18 white skulls, before counting pocket items or embalming.
The
red-improved variants total 18 red and 5 white skulls across six organs. That is useful for a zombie, but terrible for a grave without further treatment.
The difficult part is inserting them
Crafting a perfect organ is only half the process.
You still have to insert it at the Autopsy Table. Three-star organs demand substantial Anatomy Mastery:
Below the requirement, an operation may destroy the organ or cause a
Surgeon’s Error. The error permanently occupies the slot and disqualifies the body from Resurrection.
This is the great late-game anatomy trap: perfect organs are comparatively easy to manufacture, but difficult to transplant safely.
How to reach Anatomy 13
Anatomy is assembled from multiple sources. Current game-data guidance includes:
Anatomy talent branch — up to +5;
Expert Anatomist perk — +4 at the Autopsy Table.
Together these reach 13. Temporary boosts such as
Third Eye Salt (+2) and
Vegetable Salad may also help.
Be careful: Expert Anatomist is a workstation-specific bonus, not a universal boost to every crafting recipe.
See Jewelry Table and Mastery Tools and Mastery Explained if your equipment is holding you back.
The easier route: embalming
If all you want is a +14 grave, you often do not need six organ transplants.
The Embalming Table puts special mixtures into empty pocket slots. Each corpse has room for up to six pocket items.
Two important grave-oriented mixtures are:
Solution production opens with
Embalming I. Injections come later with
Embalming III.
A sensible route is to select a body with low red skulls, remove
Blood/
Fat, and add Solutions until you have enough white skulls. If red skulls remain, use an Injection as available.
This route is supported by current game data, but check each mixture's actual effect on your specific corpse, especially if patches alter repeated applications.
Are six infusions a feature or a bug?
Players report applying several infusions to one body, up to its available pocket-slot limit. This enables extremely high skull counts.
That does not make those skulls necessary for most progression. With a grave score capped by decoration quality, repeatedly adding mixtures may be expensive overkill.
The system's balance is already being debated by the community, so avoid treating every multi-infusion behavior as an eternal guarantee across patches.
A practical route to a maximum-quality grave
- 1
Unlock strong grave decorations.
- 2
Remove red pocket items while preserving white ones.
- 3
Count remaining red and white skulls.
- 4
- 5
Avoid risky surgery until you meet Anatomy requirements.
- 6
Aim for at least 14 white and zero red.
- 7
If your current decorations are much weaker, you do not need a 14-white body immediately. Improve your crafting tier first.
What about an ideal zombie?
Optimize for red skulls, a compatible collar and talents, while keeping all six organs and avoiding
Surgeon’s Error.
Six red-improved organs alone provide 18 red skulls. That requires a collar with sufficient capacity — typically the
Steel Zombie Collar, not the Bronze or Golden versions.

FAQ
Why won't a three-star upgraded organ insert?
Check insertion Anatomy Mastery. Making the Organ Improver and performing the surgery are separate requirements.
Can you fix a Surgeon’s Error?
Not through the normal current mechanics. Do not assume an Organ Improver repairs a botched slot.
What is the highest single-grave score?
With the best currently listed gravestone and fence, 14, even if the corpse has more white skulls.
Do I need a rare high-quality donor organ?
No. Organ Improver recipes accept any starting quality; the difficult part is the safe transplant afterward.
