How Zombies Work in Graveyard Keeper 2 — Mastery, Tools and Automation

A complete guide to zombie workers: why a zombie stands idle, how tools and Mastery work, what Supplier Stations do, how zombie talents grow, and how zombie farming works.

Updated · version 1.006

Quick answer

If a zombie is standing at a workstation doing nothing, check four things first: the correct tool, the zombie's own Mastery, an active craft queue, and material logistics. Your Keeper's Mastery does not transfer to workers.

In a normal automated production chain, a production zombie operates the workstation while a Supplier Zombie handles logistics: moving raw materials from accessible storage to the station and taking finished output back. Farming has an extra trap: zombie gardeners need crop signs/tablets that tell them what to grow.

Zombies are separate workers, not free workstation motors

In the first Graveyard Keeper, a zombie worker was relatively simple: place it at the job and let it run.

GK2 makes the system much deeper. Every zombie has its own:

  • Mastery values;
  • equipment and tools;
  • tech points;
  • talent tree;
  • red-skull-related talent capacity;
  • work specialisation.

The most important rule is:

Being able to craft something yourself does not mean your zombie can craft it.

How to assign a zombie to work

The basic process is:

  1. obtain or resurrect a zombie;

  2. carry it to a supported work spot;

  3. assign it to the workstation;

  4. open the zombie's own equipment interface;

  5. give it the appropriate tool;

  6. check the recipe's Mastery requirement against the zombie;

  7. queue the craft;

  8. make sure raw materials and output storage are available.

When the worker stands still, identify which step is missing before assuming automation is broken.

Why zombies need tools

Tools add Mastery to zombies just as tools add Mastery to the Keeper.

The equipment is independent, though. Your Bronze Hammer does nothing for the zombie at a Furnace until that worker has appropriate equipment of its own.

The tool must also match the work branch.

For example:

  • smithing jobs require Smithing-appropriate equipment;
  • resource/building tasks use their own tools;
  • farming jobs may require a Shovel;
  • higher-tier tools provide more Mastery.

If the zombie's Mastery is below the recipe requirement, the job will not run correctly.

How to tell what is blocking the worker

Patch 1.005 improved zombie craft status feedback: pending crafts should now indicate when skill level is too low, while craft-lock and wait-delivery icons were fixed.

Use those states:

  • low skill/Mastery — fix the zombie's level or equipment;
  • wait delivery — fix materials/logistics;
  • craft lock — check unlocks and recipe requirements;
  • queue exists and resources exist but nothing moves — re-check assignment and tool.

That is much more useful than randomly moving chests around the yard.

How zombies gain Mastery and talents

Working zombies earn their own tech points.

Those points do not go to the Keeper. They are spent in that zombie's talent tree.

As a worker repeatedly performs a type of work, you can specialise it further in that direction with Mastery increases and job-related perks.

A good way to think about the difference is that the Keeper progresses through Inspirations, while zombies progress by simply doing the work.

That is why specialist workers become valuable. Constantly carrying the same zombie from the kitchen to the forge and then to the farm spreads its progression and creates more micromanagement.

What do red skulls do for zombies?

In the zombie system, red skulls are tied to the worker's talent capacity.

More available capacity means the zombie can sustain more development in its own talent tree. This makes corpse preparation matter differently for workers than it does for a body intended for the Graveyard.

You do not need a perfect corpse for every early job. But once you are building permanent high-level specialists for expensive production chains, the starting body matters much more.

For the actual resurrection process, see How to Resurrect a Zombie.

What does a Supplier Station do?

A production zombie performs the craft, but someone still has to:

  • deliver ingredients;
  • supply fuel where relevant;
  • remove finished output;
  • place finished items into storage.

That is the logistics layer.

A basic chain looks like:

Storage
  ↓
Supplier Zombie
  ↓
Workstation + Production Zombie
  ↓
Supplier Zombie
  ↓
Storage

If the workstation shows wait delivery, the production zombie may be perfectly fine — it is simply waiting for logistics.

Which storage does automation use?

Automation works with storage accessible to that area/production chain, not every chest on the entire map.

Organise production in zones:

  • keep raw resources near the chain;
  • leave room for output;
  • make sure the Supplier can use the intended storage;
  • do not let output chests stay permanently full.

It is entirely possible to own 200 units of a material while the zombie chain still says it has none because those items are sitting in unrelated storage.

Why zombie farming does not work

This is a particularly common launch problem, repeated in both Reddit discussions and Russian community guides.

A zombie farm needs more than:

  • a Gardener Stand;
  • a worker;
  • a Shovel;
  • seeds and storage.

You also need to tell the worker what to grow.

The garden blueprint interface contains crop signs/tablets that act as instructions for zombie gardeners.

Without the appropriate marker, the worker can have valid equipment and still stand idle because no crop has been assigned.

Once configured, the farming system can handle part of its own local logistics as long as appropriate storage is available.

Why did my zombie suddenly stop producing?

Do not only check Mastery.

Common reasons include:

  • an input material ran out;
  • output storage filled up;
  • the Supplier is missing or busy;
  • the queue finished;
  • the tool was removed or changed;
  • the next recipe has a different requirement;
  • a station needs to be re-opened/reconfigured after an update.

Patch 1.006 fixed several zombie/station issues, including kitchen zombies consuming or burning ingredients without producing the dish and placement problems around kitchen stations.

If the behaviour is clearly impossible according to the UI, update the game before rebuilding the entire automation layout.

Are zombie workers slower than the Keeper?

Automation is primarily about saving your attention and running jobs in parallel, not necessarily making one individual craft faster than manual work.

The real strength appears when several workers maintain different chains while you handle Town progression, quests, exploration, or corpse processing.

That is why a network of specialised zombies is usually more useful than one “perfect” zombie constantly moved between every workstation.

Should I specialise each zombie?

Long-term, often yes.

Benefits include:

  • tech points accumulate in the relevant branch;
  • talent choices become clearer;
  • tools stay equipped for one purpose;
  • less manual reassignment;
  • troubleshooting becomes much easier.

Early on, when workers are scarce, moving one zombie between jobs is fine. It simply scales badly as the base grows.

Fast troubleshooting: zombie does nothing

Check in this exact order:

  1. Is the zombie assigned to this workstation?

  2. Does it have the correct tool?

  3. Does its own Mastery meet the recipe requirement?

  4. Is a craft actually queued?

  5. Are input materials available?

  6. Is required fuel available?

  7. Is there free output storage?

  8. Is a Supplier Station/worker required for this chain?

  9. Does the UI show wait delivery or low skill?

  10. For gardening, is the crop sign/tablet placed?

That list covers the majority of “it just stands there” problems.

FAQ

Does my Keeper's Mastery apply to zombies?

No. Every worker has its own Mastery.

Do zombies need their own tools?

Yes. Equipment is one of their main Mastery sources.

What are red skulls for on a zombie?

They are tied to the zombie's talent-development capacity.

What does wait delivery mean?

The production worker is waiting for materials/logistics. Check Supplier and storage.

Why is my zombie gardener idle even with a Shovel?

Check the garden's crop signs/tablets. The worker needs an assigned crop.

Does the zombie use my tech points?

No. It earns its own points from work and spends them in its own talent tree.

Are there current zombie bugs?

The developers have already fixed several in patches 1.005 and 1.006. If behaviour contradicts the visible requirements, update first.
