How to Get More Parishioners in Graveyard Keeper 2 — Church Quality, Happiness and Sermons

What controls sermon attendance, how to raise Happiness and Church Quality, and why an upgraded church can still be capped at 10 people.

Updated · version 1.006

Quick answer

The number of parishioners at a sermon is always the lower of:

Church Quality and current Happiness.

If your church has 25 quality but only 9 Happiness, 9 people attend. If you have 20 Happiness but Church Quality 12, only 12 attend.

There is a third limit behind Happiness: it cannot exceed Town Quality. Early Town Quality is capped at 10, so you cannot have more than 10 parishioners no matter how much furniture you build. To grow beyond that, you must progress the Town and raise its quality.

Why is my upgraded church still half empty?

Because Church Quality represents seating capacity, not automatic visitors.

The system works like this:

Church Quality = how many people the church can seat
Happiness = how many people are willing to attend right now
Town Quality = the maximum Happiness you can hold

Final attendance:

Parishioners = min(Church Quality, Happiness)

Building Church Quality 30 while sitting at 8 Happiness does almost nothing for the current sermon.

Likewise, having 20 Happiness with a quality-10 church wastes half of your potential attendance.

What is Happiness?

Happiness is the Town resource shown with the smile icon.

Its direct use is sermons.

When you start a sermon:

  • attendance is calculated;
  • one Happiness is spent per parishioner.

For example:

Church Quality = 15
Happiness = 12
→ Parishioners = 12
→ starting the sermon spends 12 Happiness

That is why a strong sermon often empties most or all of your Happiness.

You need to rebuild it before the next Wrath day.

Why can't Happiness go above 10?

Because Happiness is capped by Town Quality.

Early story progression brings Town Quality to 10 and leaves it there for a while.

Before the larger Port/Town progression:

Happiness cap = 10

Therefore:

maximum attendance = 10

Even if Church Quality is already 30 or 50.

That is not a furniture bug.

The next progression step is the Town itself.

How do you raise Town Quality?

Later, Town Quality grows through Town restoration and Linda's settlement system.

Important: repairing a house does not directly add Town Quality. Restored houses award green scrolls; use those with Linda → New people to bring residents into Town, and that is what raises Town Quality.

Every additional Town Quality point raises the ceiling for Happiness.

After Town opens, church progression is therefore no longer isolated.

A larger congregation needs all three:

  • enough Church Quality;
  • enough Happiness income;
  • enough Town Quality.

How to raise Church Quality early

When the Church first opens, it is in terrible condition.

Inside are:

  • broken pots;
  • blockages;
  • debris.

Those objects give negative quality.

Do not begin by placing expensive furniture.

First remove the penalties.

After everything is cleared, the donation box leaves the church at roughly +1.

Three early Interior Bench I pieces at +3 each then bring you to the 10 quality required by the Nun's first church objective.

Interior Bench I

Each early bench gives:

+3 Church Quality

This is the straightforward way to reach your first real attendance capacity.

The church has limited bench spots, so you cannot scale forever by spamming the cheap version.

Later progression unlocks stronger furniture.

Interior Bench II

The upgraded bench gives:

+5 Church Quality

Six Bench II pieces can provide 30 quality from bench slots alone.

Replacing furniture becomes genuinely valuable once Happiness and Town Quality are no longer the real bottleneck.

If you are still capped at 10 Happiness, upgrading every bench beyond quality 10 will not create extra parishioners yet.

Confession Booths and Shrines

The Church contains several different furniture spot types:

  • benches;
  • confession booths;
  • shrines;
  • candles;
  • incense.

Late Church Quality grows from combining these systems.

It is not simply a linear “replace every bench forever” progression.

Choir and musician zombies

Later you can build the Choir.

The Choir itself adds quality, and assigned zombies add more.

Normal zombies provide a small contribution, while musician talents can increase it dramatically.

A developed musician zombie setup can turn the Choir into a major Church Quality source.

But the main formula still applies:

Church Quality above your Happiness cap does not create extra attendance.

The Choir becomes much more powerful once the Town can sustain a larger audience.

How to earn Happiness every week

Burial Certificates

Januarius buys Burial Certificates.

The first eligible certificates each week generate Happiness in addition to money.

This is one of the easiest early sources because corpses arrive as part of normal progression anyway.

For the broader economy, see How to Make Money.

Sell the right goods to Herm

Some goods sold to Herm also generate Happiness within weekly limits.

Early examples include fish- and vegetable-related goods.

Town Gratitude

Quests often reward Town Gratitude.

Using it adds Happiness if there is room below your current cap.

Important:

do not use Town Gratitude while Happiness is already at Town Quality.

Anything above the cap is simply lost.

Town Orders

After Port/Town progression, completed Town Orders become another Happiness source.

See How Town Orders Work.

When do weekly limits reset?

On Pride day.

Trader-related Happiness has weekly caps.

Pride resets them.

The sermon itself happens on Wrath day.

A useful weekly rhythm is:

  1. Pride → trader limits reset;

  2. earn Happiness;

  3. Wrath → hold the sermon;

  4. sermon spends Happiness;

  5. begin rebuilding the pool for next week.

See Days of the Week.

When should you use Town Gratitude?

Usually after the sermon.

Example:

Town Quality = 20
Happiness before sermon = 20

Using +5 Gratitude now wastes it because the cap is already full.

Hold the sermon first.

Happiness is spent.

Now use the Gratitude and start next week's pool immediately.

How sermon success works

Every prayer has two attendance thresholds:

  • minimum parishioners required to start;
  • parishioners required for guaranteed success.

Between those values, the sermon has a success chance.

The Basic Prayer, for example:

  • can start at 4 parishioners;
  • is guaranteed at 8.

Higher Church/Happiness capacity therefore matters beyond raw Faith. Stronger prayers can require much larger congregations.

How do you get more Faith?

Faith income depends on:

  • parishioner count;
  • the selected prayer;
  • success;
  • perks and debuffs.

More people means a larger base payout.

A successful prayer adds its own bonus.

If Faith is constantly blocking Inspirations, research and Milestones, check attendance before assuming you simply need a better prayer.

See Faith and Inspirations Explained.

How do you get more money from sermons?

Money has an important extra mechanic.

Parishioners provide the base reward.

On a successful sermon, the additional money bonus also scales with Graveyard Quality.

So:

  • Church Quality → seating;
  • Happiness → actual attendance;
  • Graveyard Quality → stronger successful money bonus.

If your goal is income, the graveyard matters too.

See Red and White Skulls Explained.

Does Graveyard Quality increase attendance?

No.

It is not part of the parishioner formula.

A setup like:

Graveyard = 100
Church = 10
Happiness = 10

still gives at most 10 parishioners.

The strong graveyard makes those successful sermons more profitable; it does not create extra seats.

Church Quality 50, but only 20 people attend

Check your:

Happiness

If it is 20, that is the current attendance cap.

If you expected Happiness 50, check Town Quality, because Happiness itself cannot exceed that value.

Most attendance problems are solved by identifying the smallest of:

  1. Church Quality;

  2. Happiness;

  3. Town Quality, which caps Happiness.

Excessive Zombies and sermons

There is another later complication.

If your zombie count is above your current zombie limit, the Excessive Zombies debuff can heavily reduce Faith and money from most prayers.

Your attendance may look perfectly normal while the payout suddenly becomes terrible.

If the same number of parishioners starts producing much less reward, check the zombie debuff.

See Zombie Limit and Excessive Zombies.

Prayer items are reusable

A sermon item is not consumed when used.

Once you have crafted a good prayer, you can use that same item every week.

Treat a high-quality prayer as a permanent upgrade rather than a weekly consumable.

Where do sermon rewards go?

After the cutscene:

  • Faith drops on the floor in front of the lectern and must be picked up;
  • money goes into the Church donation box.

If your wallet did not immediately increase, check the donation box before assuming the sermon paid nothing.

What should you improve first?

Find the actual bottleneck.

Church Quality below Happiness

Improve or add furniture.

Happiness below Church Quality

Earn Happiness from certificates, traders, Gratitude and Town Orders.

Happiness stuck at Town Quality

Progress and restore the Town.

Attendance is good but payout is poor

Improve the prayer and Graveyard, and check Excessive Zombies.

That is much more efficient than blindly building every Church upgrade.
