How to Make Dynamite in Graveyard Keeper 2 — Explosive Dust, Alcohol and the Hidden Technology

How to make Dynamite after the first story stick: unlock the hidden recipe, get Explosive Dust and Alcohol, and clear later walls.

Updated · version 1.006

Quick answer

The game gives you your first Dynamite through the story, while the technology for making more stays hidden until that happens. Once revealed, Dynamite costs 30 red + 30 green tech points.

Craft Dynamite at the Formulation Bench:

2 Explosive Dust
+ 1 Alcohol
→ 1 Dynamite

It requires Anatomy Mastery 5.

Explosive Dust is an early Laboratory I mix with 2 red + 2 blue runes. Alcohol is distilled from Wine, Beer or Cider, but its Distillation Cube recipes arrive much later with the Reanimation Liquid technology.

Why do I have the first Dynamite but no recipe?

Because the technology is intentionally hidden.

The technology tree contains many ? nodes that do not fully reveal themselves until you meet a specific condition.

For Dynamite, that condition is receiving the first story stick.

Before then, there is no point:

  • searching the Formulation Bench;
  • trying to buy a Dynamite node you cannot see;
  • stockpiling Explosive Dust hoping the recipe will appear;
  • building an extra workstation.

Continue the forest story until the game introduces Dynamite.

Then the hidden node appears.

Which technology unlocks Dynamite?

The technology is simply called:

Dynamite

Cost:

  • 30 red tech points;
  • 30 green tech points.

It sits in the Anatomy/alchemy-related progression and requires the earlier path including Battle Potions II.

There is one important catch.

Buying Dynamite does not necessarily mean you can craft it immediately.

One required material — Alcohol — has a later progression gate.

At the Formulation Bench:

If you have both ingredients but the craft is greyed out, check Anatomy Mastery first.

If you still do not own the workstation, see How to Unlock the Formulation Bench.

How to get Explosive Dust

Explosive Dust is an alchemy result.

Its rune formula is:

  • 2 red;
  • 2 blue.

It can be made in Laboratory I.

You do not need Laboratory II for it.

Research appropriate ingredients and combine values that add up to the formula.

Easy Explosive Dust combinations

Several early ingredient pairs can reach the formula.

Examples include:

These are not the only valid pairs: the Laboratory checks the final rune total rather than a fixed named ingredient list.

There are many valid combinations because the Laboratory cares about total rune values rather than a fixed named ingredient list.

Your target is simply:

red runered rune + blue runeblue rune

If the entire rune system is still confusing, see Alchemy Guide.

Where can I find ready-made Explosive Dust?

A chest in the Old Mine contains 2 Explosive Dust.

That is exactly enough Dust for one Dynamite.

After opening the mine, you may therefore already have most of your second stick solved. The remaining blockers are Alcohol, the Formulation Bench and the technology.

Avoid wasting those two Dust on random experiments if you want to open the Factory walls soon.

How do you get Alcohol?

This is the real progression trap.

Alcohol is produced at the Distillation Cube.

However, the early Alchemy, Distillation technology unlocks the Cube and Melted Fat — not the Alcohol recipes.

The six Alcohol recipes arrive with the later:

Reanimation Liquid

technology.

Current cost:

  • 30 red;
  • 40 green;
  • 50 blue tech points;

and the technology itself remains hidden until the relevant story progression.

That means this situation is completely normal:

Dynamite unlocked, Explosive Dust ready, Distillation Cube built, but no Alcohol recipe.

You still need the later Anatomy/Reanimation branch.

How to make Alcohol from Beer

After Alcohol distillation is unlocked:

1 Beer
+ 2 Clay Urns
+ 20 Fuel
→ 2 Alcohol

Requirement:

Anatomy Mastery 3

One Beer batch gives enough Alcohol for two Dynamite crafts.

You still need four Explosive Dust to actually make two sticks.

How to make Alcohol from Wine

Wine is more efficient:

1 Wine
+ 2 Clay Urns
+ 20 Fuel
→ 4 Alcohol

Again, Anatomy Mastery 3.

If your Vineyard is already running, Wine becomes a very efficient Alcohol source.

You do not need to build an enormous wine industry just for one Factory wall, though.

Can you buy Alcohol?

Yes.

A Tier II Apothecary in Town sells Alcohol.

This can be much faster when:

Sometimes purchasing one Alcohol is smarter than pushing a large section of the Anatomy tree for a single explosion.

See How to Upgrade Town Shops.

Where do Clay Urns come from?

Clay Urns come from pottery/ceramic progression.

Do not confuse them with Clay Plates.

The Distillation Cube uses different ceramic items for different recipes:

What is the first Dynamite for?

The main early use is the collapsed Quarry cave.

Blasting it opens one entrance to the Old Mine. Clearing the Quarry cave also requires Building Mastery 8.

That is important beyond simple exploration.

The hidden zombie-gathering technologies only reveal after:

  1. the Quarry cave is blasted;

  2. the Factory-to-Mine passage is also cleared.

Your first Dynamite is therefore part of the route toward renewable Iron, Coal and other automated resources.

See How to Unlock Zombie Gathering.

Why make more Dynamite?

The Factory contains two Broken Walls.

Each uses:

1 Dynamite

to demolish.

Those walls expand usable Factory space and layout options.

In the current game data, the three main Dynamite uses are therefore:

  1. Quarry cave;

  2. Factory wall 1;

  3. Factory wall 2.

After the story gives you the first stick, you normally need two more to clear all of them.

Do I need dozens of Dynamite?

No.

Dynamite is not a normal mining consumable.

You do not blow up Iron deposits or every blockage in the game with it.

Most barriers use things such as:

Do not convert every rare ingredient into Explosive Dust “just in case.”

Make Dynamite for specific marked obstacles.

My Explosive Dust mix does not work

Check:

  1. the ingredients have been researched;

  2. the Laboratory can access them;

  3. the total is really 2 red + 2 blue;

  4. you are using the Laboratory rather than the Formulation Bench;

  5. the specific ingredient variants have the rune values you expect.

Use the values shown in your own researched ingredient data rather than trusting a random fixed combination list forever.

Why is the Dynamite recipe grey?

Checklist:

If those are all satisfied, the craft should be available.

Mastery can come from equipment as well as talents.

See Mastery Explained and Jewelry Table and Mastery Equipment.

Can the Alchemist perk give extra Dynamite?

The relevant Formulation Bench bonus can give a chance at additional output.

Treat that as a bonus, not part of your guaranteed material calculation.

If a Factory wall is blocking progression, plan for one guaranteed Dynamite per normal craft.

Can you buy Dynamite itself?

The reliable post-story method is crafting it.

Even when story rewards provide individual sticks, Dynamite is not something you should treat as an ordinary always-available shop commodity.

Build a reliable Dust + Alcohol route instead.

Fastest way to make the second Dynamite

If the first stick has already opened the Quarry:

  1. enter the Old Mine;

  2. loot the chest containing 2 Explosive Dust;

  3. make sure the Formulation Bench is unlocked;

  4. obtain one Alcohol through distillation or the Town Apothecary;

  5. reach Anatomy Mastery 5;

  6. craft one Dynamite;

  7. use it on the Factory wall you want to open.

This route skips the need to mix your first extra Dust manually.
